deságua - solo album
This album is a collection of ideas and concepts rooted in Marina Mello’s harp practice. As classically trained musician, she has, in recent years, developed a unique and authentic approach to playing—exploring techniques such as preparing the harp with objects, using guitar pedal effects, or simply detuning the strings. Both lever and pedal harps were used throughout the album. Listeners will encounter a wide spectrum of styles and sounds, yet the work is held together by a common thread. On one hand, there is the desire to explore the word deságua—a Brazilian Portuguese term that evokes the image of a river flowing into the ocean. On the other hand, the album moves from beautiful melodies and harp tones to raw textures, close-mic recordings, distortions, and moments of stark, unfiltered sound. It is controversial, honest—at times repetitive, at times unexpected. In 2026, the album was nominated for the German Record Critic’s Award in the category Contemporary classic music (longest 1/2026. All the music was composed by Marina Mello, except the the voice on the track ‘ponto de vista’, no overdub, cuts or eletronnics was added. All recorded in two beautiful afternoons in Winterthur, Switzerland.
